HORTICULTURE INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP LEADS THE CHARGE AGAINST INVASIVE PLANTS IN CALIFORNIA

San Francisco, Calif., December 12, 2006 – How can the horticulture industry simultaneously serve their customers, protect wildlife and wildlands, and save Californians millions of dollars? By stopping the spread of invasive plants. Industry leaders are participating in an initiative called California Horticultural Invasives Prevention (Cal-HIP) to halt new introductions of invasive plants – which damage local ecosystems and are expensive to control or remove once they take hold. Cal-HIP members are devising ways to avoid growing, selling or promoting the problem plants, and they invite the entire California horticulture industry to join them in the new PlantRight program.

"Invasive plants are a national problem with regional solutions," said Nicholas Staddon, Director of New Plants for Monrovia, a large California-based Nursery. "I encourage nursery owners and managers, and everyone involved in plant selection, to look at their current offerings and identify plants that are currently listed as invasive or potentially invasive, and then offer suitable alternatives for their customers."

Bob Falconer, Executive Vice President of California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, concurred. "The horticulture industry has the opportunity to be proactive – to do what we can to address the serious and expensive problem of invasive plants, rather than wait for regulations to decide for us. We saw in other states that when policies are established without the industry's involvement, the industry suffers. I hope to see all California nurseries and garden centers embrace the PlantRight program and do all they can to prevent the spread of invasive plants."
